So You Think You Can Dance: Complexions Elevates the Motion Medium

Designers of products, cars, and buildings, take note.

Bodies in motion. When dance is studied, choreographed, conceived and designed by technicians, there is no finer representation of movement. Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden formed Complexions Dance Company in 1994, which quickly became a company of note for exquisite artistry in the intricate choreography of multicultural cast.

Last year I had the pleasure of attending a Complexions open rehearsal that left my heart beating, pulse racing and the pleasure principle of joy that occurs when one has an intimate closeup of true art. They performed to Stevie Wonder, in what was a transformational experience of dancers moving with precision and grace.

Naturally when I received the email that these two would be guest choreographers on the hit show “So You Think You Can Dance,” I had to tune in to see what was much more than simple Hollywood moves, but the real deal serious dance from the depths. Their assigned dancers performed the pas de deux and naturally killed it. It was apparent that these choreographers brought out something in them that was emotive, express, and abstract — to go beyond the steps. I think they’ll take it.

The company will be touring this fall in Detroit, Atlanta, and New York City.
