How about Game 5 in Philadelphia? I have a (Detroit) Tiger heart through and through, but I love a good game, and this series has me captivated. I’m softening up to the Yankees — something about Joe Girardi I like, and the cleanup man Mo Rivera. Even A-Rod has me smiling affectionately. Of course, I love that Michigan is on the field in a big way, every time Derek Jeter dashes across the infield. But Philly has admirable sluggers and the fiery pitching of Cliff Lee was thrilling for 7 innings.
Bottom line — there’s nothing like the World Series for hanging on every pitch. Gary Sheffield, in his Yankee days, once told me that baseball is a game defined by learning how to lose and to persevere. I love that. Learning how to savor the sweet moments and move past the discomfort.
