Jennifer Knapp at Joe’s Pub

Gotryke photographer blogger Priscilla Mercedes Vazquez covered Jennifer Knapp’s return to the stage at Joe’s Pub in New York City on Aug 31.

In 2003 Jennifer Knapp received two Grammy nominations, had sold over one-million records and toured with Lilith Fair. Knapp was on the road 250 days a year. In a word, she was exhausted. The music industry wasn’t giving her what she wanted, or needed, so she decided to walk away. The choice was not easy, and it was a full year between her final determination to quit and her last show.

She left the business, traveled the world and eventually arrived in Australia, where she would spend the next few years working and paying bills like the rest of us. No fancy limousines or backstage passes. Her guitar collected dust for 5 years.

Little by little the itch came back, and she started plucking at her guitar, writing songs and playing them for her friends, who famed her flames of desire to get back into songwriting. Now, seven years later, Jennifer Knapp is back with a new album “Letting Go” and a new perspective on life.

A folksy rock album, “Letting Go” is an intimate portrait of the artist. Each song provides an honest look into the mind of a very charming and honest woman, who hopes we can all find a way to express ourselves without the fear of condemnation. Knapp performed a few of her new songs at Joe’s Pub, and a few of her older ones at Joe’s Pub last week.

Here is a little video of the ever-delightful Jennifer Knapp.
