New Swoon Print: Walki for Haitian Konbit Shelter
This just in from our artist friend Swoon, a perfect addition for the holiday heart, a print for sale in support of the work she is doing in Haiti. Essentially, artists, engineers, architects and builders are working to together to construct Konbit Shelters in a Haitian village devastated by the earthquake. The dome-like structure is sustainable and inexpensive to build and is comprised of mostly earth, with no specialized scaffolding required. Last summer a team traveled to the village of Bigones, Haiti to construct a community center, working with the local residents and training them in the Konbit building technique.The team will return on December 21st to begin construction on single family homes, and proceeds of the print will go toward that effort.
The print is made of a three-layer screenprint on handmade Indian jute paper measuring 13″ x 21″ and is limited at an edition of 300. Of course once the print sells out, the organization will continue to accept contributions. Here’s what the artist had to say about her new print, a portrait of boy named Walki, who she met during her time in Bigones:
i am headed back to haiti next week! there is a lot going on there, but we will be very cautious, promise, promise, promise.
so, i am writing to bug you for a little tiny bit of wind in our sails. i have just released a print to support our second trip.
it’s a drawing of one of the boys from the villages where we are working. it’s a large edition, priced really affordably because we are hoping to cast our net for support very wide, to include people who might not always buy artwork, but who are interested, at the same time as being interested in supporting haiti. i am wondering if you would be up for spreading the word about this, since it’s only going to be on sale for 2 weeks, and we are trying to generate a lot of money from it to pay for the 5 weeks of house building ahead of us.if you have any friends or family who might be interested in this, upper playground who is helping us has said that they can get it delivered by christmas on orders that happen soon.
