Dream Drives Jaguar: The Jaguar XK and Jaguar XJ

filmmaker and author dream hampton describes her latest adventure driving two Jaguars.  Late last fall, I test drove a big bodied 2012 Jaguar XJ around Los Angeles. The cashmere metallic four-door sedan was so luxurious I damn near complained it didn’t come with a driver. (Never mind my “real” car’s a Ford that incidentally, not so long ago, owned Jaguar). I so wanted to experience the backseat I parked in the lot... Read More

Dream Cars: Range Rover Room

Tune in for episode 2 of flmmaker dream hampton’s “Dream Cars for Gotryke.” She also tumbles here. I was in Los Angeles to write a magazine cover story on a film actor. I was grateful to have a few days with the 2012 Range Rover. Anyone whose ever driven in Los Angeles knows how intimate one becomes with their vehicle, you can literally spend hours in traffic. I used to judge what I thought were my superficial Cali friends who  spend as much... Read More

Uncle Daddy: Tales from a Los Angeles band practice

Collins Reiter sat down with up-and-coming LA band, Uncle Daddy, before a Monday night rehearsal. She describes the experience, after knowing the band for about a year as profoundly “Uncle Daddy.” Piled in the back of a truck bed, multiple cans of Rock Star energy drink and cigarettes later, she finds them six men of both insanity and genius. TJ Stafford, Noah Needleman, Andrew Jed, Christopher Allis, Robbie Anderson, and Jacob Szekely,... Read More

New Exhibition: Syvlia Ji at Corey Helford

Sylvia Ji shows “Shapeshifter” at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City. Ji’s paintings are figurative in nature —women depicted with bold tribal elements of Native American folklore, and a strong color palette.  Carolyn Niethammer’s book “Daughters of the Earth: The Lives and Legends of American Indian Women” served as a major influence. Twelve paintings make up the collection of new works. The show will be on view... Read More

One, Two, Three Hike…

Gotryke contributor and Vain Magazine Editor Rachelle Gauthier takes on the mountain, one foot at a time. It was a warm, sunny California afternoon and instead of going for a long drive, or drinking Mojoitos in Malibu I went for a Sunday, non-football kind of hike. So I drove about 15 miles north and headed to Rocky Peak Trail with my very competitive, tomboyish and pretty best friend, Tina, and my non-enthused husband. It was the first time that... Read More
